(un)arranged Marriage by Bali Rai

(un)arranged marriage is about a boy called Manjit (a.k.a Manny) who is part of a Punjabi family. His parents believe that he should marry a Punjabi girl in an arranged marriage and make a big family. The only problem is that Manny doesn’t want to carry on this family tradition and he wants to live his own life his own way. This book is reflecting on Manny’s teenage years throughout his journey to break the family tradition.

A family trip to India makes Manny’s feelings even stronger, this is where he meets his Uncle Jag. His Uncle Jag was just like Manny and managed to escape the traditional Punjabi wedding his family had planned for him. Will he now be able to help Manny do the same?

This book is written in first person which helps you to understand the feelings Manny has and the situation he’s going through. It really helped me to understand what life is like for someone to live in such a strict family but doesn’t want to live that way.

Will Manny manage to get out of his situation? You’ll need to read it to find out!

This book made me feel really sorry for Manny as he was being forced into a situation he really didn’t want to be in. I found this book really good and I would definitely recommend it for people my age to read.

Olaf treats them badly and goes out of his way to make them miserable. The kids are then taken to other relatives but Olaf tries to get them back by dressing up in disguises He doesn’t like seeing the kids happy so he tries to kill them. He kills all of the relatives they are with so that he can have custody of the once again. The adults don’t know what he is up to but he doesn’t fool the kids. Do the kids stop Olaf and save their remaining family. I chose this book to read and not the first ones because I like this one better. You don’t have to read the first ones to understand what it is about because it is a story in it’s self. This story has a lot of drama and excitement in it and would be good for people who like adventure stories.

The World According to Clarkson is a very good book and a great laugh.
It is written by Jeremy Clarkson and is the first in a series of six. It takes columns that he wrote as a journalist from the newspaper the Sunday times from the years 2001 to late 2003. Topics vary from big news to stories of when he travelled Europe.

You don’t have to be a fan of Clarkson to read this book because there’s something for everyone but it is mainly aimed towards teenagers and adults and it’s not really for young children.

The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman

The Subtle Knife is all about Will Parry, a boy who wants to learn more about his father because he was an explorer and he went out on a mission in Antarctica and never returns.

So Will goes out to Oxford to see if he can find anything about his father. Failing to find anything, Will sees a cat run into a bush and not come back. He investigates and finds a portal of some sort and he runs through it. He finds himself in a city of silence, no one is here. He later meets Lyra, who is neither from his world nor this one. They team up and form as allies and continue their adventures together from there. Will discovers that there is more than just his world, there are millions…

I really love this book because it is really exciting and it may start off boring, but it gets more gripping. There are however, a lot of characters which may cause confusion, and a complex storyline which you must have either read the first book, or see the film The Golden Compass to understand. I would recommend it for those who love realistic fantasy and want a great, phenomenal adventure.

Scorpia – Anthony Horowitz

Scorpia is the 5th book in the Alex Rider series written by famous children’s’ author, Anthony Horowitz. It is about a 14 year old schoolboy named Alex Rider who was told by Yassen Gregorovich (Eagle Strike) “Go to Venice, find Scorpia, and you will find your destiny.” Co-incidentally the very next school year there is a trip to Venice with the school. Alex is not sure whether to go or not so he seeks advice off of his caretaker, Jack Starbright and she encourages him to go. So he heads off into Venice as a schoolboy, not aware at all that he will run into danger once again, but this time with one of the most ruthless gangs ever known, Scorpia.

I like this book because of the storyline. It is very different from most teen-action books and the author includes lots of detail in describing the scenes and it makes you feel like you are witnessing it. In the end all is revealed to Alex, but is it what he wants to hear?

I would recommend this book to all children aged 10-14. Overall I would give this book a 10/10.

New Moon by Stephanie Meyer

New Moon is one of the better based books out of the series of Twilight. Edward moves a way suddenly and leaves Bella heartbroken. She discovers a relationship which she never thought she would have with Jacob Black who also has a strange family background. Though Jacob becomes other than what she seems. The action would really start to begin in the second half of the novel, and all the secrets are revealed.

I loved this book, I couldn’t keep my eyes away. You wouldn’t expect anything that happens in that series and would recommend this book to people of the age of 12-14. I will continue to read the rest of the twilight series. The book was amazing and I am sure to hope that the next book is even better!

New Moon by Stephanie Meyer

New Moon is the second in Twilight series and
Follows on the story of Edward and Bella’s love
for each other. This is the best book in the
series for me because it goes into a lot more
detail than Twilight and you can really relate to
it in real life some of the time. Edward feels that
he is doing more harm to Bella that good so he
and his Family move away. Unknown to Edward
Bella Is slowly slipping into a state of severe
depression and is finding it hard to cope.

Bella soon finds out that if she feels like she did
With Edward she can here is voice inside her
Head. This means she has to become more of a
Daredevil so she buys 2 bikes and takes them
Over to Jacob Black’s house. She soon finds
Out that she forgets about every thing and she
Feels came and in control.

Later on Jacob stops answering Bella’s calls and
She starts slipping back into a depression. She
Soon finds out the reason why, Jacob is a werewolf!

One day Alice arrives at Bell’s house and tells her
That everything is ok but when Jacob and bella are
In the kitchen Jacobs answers and the man on the
Asks where Charlie was and he say at the funeral.
The man on the phone was Edward and her thinks
He meant at Bella’s funeral so he goes over to
Italy to see the Volturi to ask if he can be killed.
Alice picks up on this so they jump on a plane
But can they save Edward.
I highly recommend this book.

Chinese Cinderella By Adeline Yen Mah

The book “Chinese Cinderella” was written by Adeline Yen Mah. It is an autobiography about her tragic childhood and her fight for recognition in her family.

It all starts when her mother died to weeks after she was born. Her siblings all blame her for killing her mother and it was all her fault. It doesn’t help that her father then marries an evil woman who they called Niang. She then becomes the leader of the house and only respects her two children and leaves the other five to fend for themselves. She buries herself in her schoolwork to take her mind of her upsetting home life. She finds great joy and refuge in her writing. The only people that really love her are her Aunt Baba and her Ye Ye (Grandfather).

This is a fun yet very traumatic read it was one of those books that you cannot put down until it is finished. I would highly recommend this book to anybody.

Adeline Yen Mah also has a second and more adult version of her autobiography called “Falling Leaves”.

I rate this book 4 stars!

Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

The Artemis Fowl books are very good because there an easy read and funny.
My favourite Artemis Fowl book is the 1st one it is based on a kid genius that has discovered fairies; he manages to capture a LEPrecon police elf. Her name is Holly Short she is the only female elf
In the Elvin police force. She lives underneath the earth’s surface near the core at a mega city called Tara it is the biggest city under the surface.

He takes her back to his mansion which he inherited of his father it has security cameras a wall on all sides and Artemis’s own body guard called Butler he is a huge man compared to Artemis that can cook clean or use any weapon on earth or any thing as a weapon.

He is smart because he predicted the more advanced fairies had trackers on their armour he found the tracker in her helmet and had butler hide it on a boat where her commander Root came to rescue her. But he didn’t know that Artemis would play such a crafty trick: he strapped a sizeable bomb to the tracker root survived but had a whole new perception of Artemis fowl.

Holly had travelled above ground to get to a oak tree which she could regenerate her magic, all she had to do was put an acorn into the earth and her magic would come flooding back, but she had not been able to do this before she was abducted. What Butler and Artemis did not know was that she had stashed the acorn in her boot.

The rest of the LEPrecon was planning an attack at fowl manner due to the fact that humans could have access to weapons and technology that they were not ready for such as Holly’s side arm that could with a single blast blow a house up.

They had decided to take a master of “breaking and entering” out of jail to do the job – tunnelling under the manor get holly out so the LEP could blue rinse the place which was bio–bombing the place.

He failed to save them so they send in a troll to bash the place down but artemis has a plan that could get them all killed ….

Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison

Angus, thongs and full-frontal snogging (aka Angus, thongs and perfect snogging) is a book about a teenage girl named Georgia. Georgia is an average teenage girl and throughout this book you will experience things a normal teenage girl does during her teenage years.

Her friends are called Jas, Ellen, Rosie and Jools . They call themselves the ace gang.
During the book Georgia is moaning at her dad and mum to have a disco in a club for her birthday coming up but her mum and dad won’t say yes. So when Georgia’s dad goes away to New Zealand with his work, Georgia is left with her mum, little sister Libby and her cat Angus and she is hoping she can persuade her mum to let her have the birthday party without her dad being here.

Jas and Georgia are the closest out of all their friends and when these two utterly, fit boys come to there school they both get major crushes on both of them and try to get them to notice them . Georgia has her eyes on Robbie and Jas has her eyes on Tom. Tom and Robbie are both brothers but are not very much alike in personalities.

So will Georgia get her birthday party and will Jas and Georgia get the two boys they want? You will have to read it to find out.

I found this book amazing. After I started reading the book I couldn’t put it down. It made me laugh a lot and I liked it because it was set in a diary sort of way. I would recommend this for girls because I don’t really think boys would find this really that interesting to read . This is definitely a book worth reading!

Books to give you a fright!

Dracula – Bram Stoker
The original vampire novel this is a series of diary entries and similar that tells the story of Jonathan Harker who goes to Transylvania to sell property to an odd client and his fiancé left back in England. Dark, creepy and well worth a read.

Mysterious villain is linked to a respectable man but more is going on than first appears. Short but brilliant.

Frankenstein: or `The Modern Prometheus' by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
Chilling gothic tale – Dr. Frankenstein creates life from exhumed body parts but having succeeded no longer wants his creation. The creation then sets out to destroy his maker. Thought provoking and excellent.

Haunted by James Herbert
Haunted house – three nights to solve the mystery but will David Ash make it to the end? Classic atmospheric horror not much gore but plenty of scares.

The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe
A short story where a friend is invited to the home of Roderick Usher (a strange and troubled man) but upon the death of Roderick’s sister it takes a mysterious and creepy turn. Poe wrote a bunch of great ghost stories and creepy poems including ‘The Raven’ which is also well worth a read.

The Shining by Stephen King
King has written loads of horror classics many of which have been made into movies. The Shining is the story of a writer in a haunted hotel, who gradually becomes controlled by the ghosts. Very scary – to be read with all the lights on (the movie was an 18!).

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
Nobody Owens lives in a graveyard with the ghosts for friends after the murder of his parents. But his parents murder won’t rest until Nobody is dead too! Page turning as well as award winning teen fiction. Gaiman also wrote ‘Coraline’ another creepy but excellent story.

She finds out they are freaks and tells Count Olaf and then he kills Madame Lulu by throwing her in a lion pit and then tries to kill the Baudelaire’s by rolling there carriage off a cliff and hope they will die but do they survive………….?

The Looking Glass Wars - Frank Beddor

This was excellent! So easy to read but brilliant. It’s a reworking of Alice in Wonderland – still full of weirdness but much darker and with more blood shed. I loved the way the various characters are re-worked I loved the Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat! The sequel ‘Seeing Redd’ has just been moved to my must read book pile.

Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry - Mildred D. Taylor

The story is told over a year through the eyes of Cassie (a 9 year old black girl in 1933 Mississippi). During the year her world changes as she discovers what her position in society is, or at least what the white folks who live nearby think it is, and why their opinion counts for so much. The warmth and love within her family gives an excellent grounding and allows for some truly horrific things to happen but because of Cassie’s faith in her family you always felt they would work out. Cassie’s protected perspective means the story came in bits of over-heard conversation or playground gossip so it takes a while for the whole picture to emerge and the consequences of actions to be revealed.

An excellent book well worth a read!

This book is really good if you like fiction. There is also a movie about the first one and they are making the others very soon. Roar is a book set in the future in a city built because there isn’t enough space. The wall is built around the city to stop the plagued animals from entering. The city can only build up and is built in levels like a block of flats. The lower-class must live in the dinghy, moist shadows.

Mika and Ellie are the main characters they are twins who are separated when Ellie goes missing. Everyone tells Mika she is dead but he knows there is something else behind it.

I liked this book because it was a futuristic sci-fi novel. There was an element of awe added to it. The book was about a game where kids could win food and prizes for their families. It was played in a model of a jet fighter that twisted and turned as you drove and your partner could help you by gunning on the turret in the back. I loved it all except the ending, which I thought was terrible.

Kill Swap by James Lovegrove

Kill Swap is a fast paced adventure thriller book. It is about a young boy who has problems in his family and needs to sort them out. That is when he hears about Trouble Fix Limited. The owner of the company (Fred Herring) says that he can sort out all of his problems if he does one thing. Kill another person! After that event the book takes many unexpected turns and it leaves you on the edge of your seat not wanting to stop reading. I would recommend the book to a friend and would probably give it 8 out of 10.

Angus, thongs and full frontal snogging by Louise Rennison

Angus thongs and full frontal snogging is a very good book about a teenage girl called Georgia. Georgia’s dad has set off to go to New Zealand for a job and Georgia is left with her mum and sister Libby. She is part of the ace crew, Jas, Ellen, Jools, Mabs and Georgia, also known as the famous five. Jas and Georgia are the best of friends and when the new boys come to school they go all shy and nervous. Georgia has a cat called Angus she got him when she was up in Scotland. He was a stray and she thought that he was cute but Angus was a viscous cat and whenever he is lying on Georgia’s bed he will attack her.

I really liked this book because it was set like a diary and it told you about the little things as well as the big things. The book made me laugh a lot and I would recommend reading it to anyone. It is more of a girly book but it is still funny. There are 10 books in total. I will be looking forward to the 10th book still to come out.

It's ok, I'm wearing really big knickers by Louise Rennison

I enjoyed this book it made me laugh. I have read the other books in the series and I think they are brilliant. Louise Rennison is a great author I think that the books she writes are suitable for my age group. There is the main character called Georgia Nicholson, she is paranoid about her nose she thinks it’s massive. There are nine books in the series. Georgia’s best friend is called Jas. She is funny she wore big knickers with a mini skirt. This is my favourite book out of the series because it was funnier than the rest of them. There was a movie out this year about the first book and this book and another called ‘Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging’. I think the books are better because they give more detail and description.

The Skeleton.

Even Fouler Football by Michael Coleman

I have just read this book recently and it was very good seen as I love football and it’s about the history of football and includes how to do tricks, how to fool the goalkeeper etc. This book is really good if you like football, it tells you how football used to be played and where football was originated. This book is quite funny, it includes comic strips and makes jokes out of some of the information. It has lots of quizzes to see if you have read well and how much you have learned. I highly recommend this book.
