The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster

The Phantom Tollbooth was written by Norton Juster in 1961 and is a fantasy book which follows the adventures of a boy called Milo. Milo is a smart boy but was never happy with what he was doing and was often bored. One day he came home and found a package in his bedroom with a tollbooth and a map in it. So he set up the tollbooth and drove through in his toy car to find himself in a new world, driving along a road. In his journey Milo visits many places such as the Doldrums, Expectations, Digitopolis and Dictionopolis and makes some good friends like Tock, a dog with an alarm clock on his body and the Humbug a big, beetle who is never right about anything. Milo is set a quest which he must complete so that the kingdom can be restored to harmony but finds that there are some obstacles in his way.
