How pretty do the shelves look?

I've added a pile of new stock to the Adult Fiction - so much I've had to switch out some of the display shelves!

I've also created a 'Adult' Graphic Novel section which includes titles like Watchmen by Alan Moore and Older Teen Manga.

Reference has also seen some changes - I've reduced the collection but I've added Ripley's Belive it or Not, Guinness Book of World Records 2012 and 2012 Top 10.

Also now found in reference are the Issues series. They now sit next to Essential Articles (which are in the pretty coloured folders on the bottom shelf)  which will hopefully make finding resources for a discursive eassy easier!

A few of you took the time to add your comments on how we could improve the library so here is the feeback to some of the more frequently asked for changes.

42 pupils requested the school unblock Facebook/Youtube/Games - alas this is outside the school library's control however why not raise it at year group pupil councils and see if you can't get this changed.

More books, new books - the annual budget is tight (only £1500 for everything including printer ink, photocopying and pens) I'm afraid and book stock selection has to be base on supporting subject needs against reading for pleasure. Last year I added 740 new titles to our stock. On the plus side we can get books in from the public libraries - just ask.

Tell us when you get new books - that I can do and I will try and keep the shelfari link on the left of the blog updated with the latest new books. Check out the display shelves on top of the adult and teen stock - often new books will be on display there.

More seats, tables and computers - alas folks this won't happen anytime soon we have some of the best computers in the school and 70 people can be seated in here at once. Though if you feel it is an issue raise it at pupil council meetings and see if you can convince school management to look into it (there is a space issue though - not sure we can physically fit more tables into the library).

A quiet study area - from August the lower library will be for quiet study at break and lunch.

Some of you wanted me to ease the rules about coming to the library to do something and instead let you just sit and chat. The reality is that with around 1000 pupils a week using the space and only enough to let 70 sit at once, there just isn't room for people to be in here just chatting. There is high demand for seats and other pupils want to play tables games, read, use a computer, do homework, study, pick a book or play games on their phone or console quietly. Sitting and chatting could be done in other parts of the school so I'm afraid you will just have to find somewhere else to hang out.

2% of you aren't confident using the Internet and girls are slightly more likely to be less confident than boys.

1 in 5 of you often can't find what you want online.

Remember the librarian can help just ask Mrs.Wilson to help show you how to find stuff online or check out the webpage for tips.

62% of you trust most of what you find online.

Less than half of you do any kind of quality check on what you find.

Only 1 in 10 check who wrote a website.


1 in 3 of you check the date of what you are looking at (boys are more likely to to this)

1 in 3 of you double check the information elsewhere (girls are more likely to do this)

1 in 10 of you claim not to go on any new websites.

Library Survey - What do you do on the Internet?

84% of you use the internet for homework.

1 in 3 boys read the news but only 1 in 5 girls do.

85% of you are on Facebook.

1 in 3 of you tweet - and girls are twice as likely to than boys.

13% blog while 7% of you have your own websites (boys are twice as likely to have their own website than girls).

89% of you watch videos through YouTube or similar sites.

Only 4% download eBooks.

JYHS Library Survey - Internet at Home

1% of pupils said they don't have internet at home but 4% didn't answer so there could be more of you without access at home.

- Rememebr the public libraries have free internet access to members so pop in and get online!

For those of you that do access the internet at home -

74% of pupils have no rules at home about their Internet use.

S1 to S3 pupils are the most likely to have rules with nearly ever 2 in 5 having rules
only 1 in 10 of S4 to S6 pupils have rules.

Girls online use is twice as likely to be checked by a parent or guardian than boys!

JYHS Library Survey - Finding Things You Want to Read!

Nearly 4000 books were issues last year from the school library.

740 new books were added to stock.

67% of you claim you can easily find something you want to read.

If you can't then please just ask. If there is money available we'll try and buy in books you fancy if they aren't available from within the council.

Of course you can always check for yourself on the library catalogue if you find books you fancy just ask at the desk and we'll request them for you.

JYHS Library Survey - who uses the library?

#shoutabout  - 906 pupils (82%) gave their feedback in the survey and I'm going to share the results with you via the blog/ facebook and twitter over the few days.

Who uses the library?

1 in 4 pupils claim to use the library daily or weekly.

Boys are more likely to use the library daily/ weekly than girls.
 36% of girls and 36% of boys said they never use the library in their free time.

Goodbye and Good Luck!

Friday night was the school prom and a chance to say good bye to some of the monitors who helped during their school time. Chief amongst these were Dionne (2011/12 Head Monitor) and Alistair who were a great help this year.

Dionne we will miss you enthusiasm, laugh, support, cartoon pasta, popcorn, pizza but mostly Mrs. Wilson will miss the tea :)

Alistair it's you I need to thanks for some of the years most memorable moments - always remember "there are two options but one of them means dressing as a pirate!"

Also leaving us this year are Allan (who has kept the room of requirement tidy), Jamie and Jordan (winners of the cutest couple), Lois (always a friendly face for the monitors to get support from) and Connor (who added fun).

Find out all about women fighting to get the vote in Scotland

The National Library of Scotland has produced an educational resource on the struggle of Women in Scotland to get the right to vote in elelctions.

Although designed for class use check out the sources section has loads of contemporay accounts which are facinating to have a look at.

Vist your local public library!

On the 5th of Feburary you need to support our libraries in the UK. As councils look to make savings many are cutting public and school library services. Although West Lothian haven't gone down this route many others have.

The Chartered Institute of Library Information Professionals (CILIP) have organised 'Save Our Libraries Day' and are looking for help from across the globe with a day of action in support of UK public library services.

If you think libraries are worth saving then show your support and visit your local library and take out a book.

Guantánamo Bay Prisoner Reading List

There's not a lot to look forward to if you're one of the 176 prisoners held in the U.S. detention facility at Guantánamo Bay — no visits from loved ones; no parole or release date; and for many, no prospect even of a day in court to answer charges. One ray of light the the library trolley that offers a range of titles. What is one of the most popular? Harry Potter of course - the Arabic translation is one of the most requested books they have.
