Book Week Scotland 2013

This week is Book Week Scotland (25th November to 1st December 2013) and we've been marking it with our competition for S1 to S3. There’s still time to take part in this competition to write a short fantasy story of no more than 300 words for which there will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes.   Alternatively, S1-S3 pupils are invited to design a bookmark which will then be displayed in the English corridor and a prize given for 1st place.  See Miss Greenhorn or Mrs Lumsden for more information and look out for posters around the school! Remember all entries have to be in the English Department or Library by the end of this week (Friday 29th November).

We also have the Scholastic Book Fair visiting us in the Library - come along and take a look at the great books on offer

Zelah Green Queen Of Clean by Vanessa Curtis

Zelah Green Queen Of Clean is a very good book, written by Vanessa Curtisit. It is about a girl that loves cleaning. At the beginning it seems a bit boring but if you read on and let your imagination run free you will understand why I like this book. Although some parts of the book are sad it’s a really good book and it will make the reader engage with the story. I think people should read this book because it is an amazing book and if you read it you will love it. By a1s2d3

The Hunger Gamesby Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games is set in the city of Panem ( based on America) it’s in the not so far away future and takes place in district 12 . Katniss (‘’Katnip’’) volunteers to take her sister, Primrose’s , spot in The Hunger Games, a annual battle for survival . Where 24 people go in but only one can come out as victor ..... This book is mainly aimed to slightly older readers (12+) and is a great read for something different as its romance and thriller and murder in one, its one of a set of three fantastic books .

Review: The Hunger Games by Susanne Collins

This book is based on a fascinating futuristic world. Once a year all 12 districts sacrifice one young man and woman between the ages 12 and 18 to fight to the death in remembrance of the uprising of the districts against the Capitol. In a result, the Capitol defeated the 12 districts and the 13th was destroyed. As a result the Capitol introduced the Hunger Games so the districts would not form another uprising. When sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen came forward to replace her younger sister as volunteer she entered the games, alongside Peeta Mellark. The two young candidates leave there home and make their way to the Capitol in preparation of the games.

I would highly recommend this book as I was unable to put it down. The imagery was outstanding and by the end you really felt as if you knew the characters. I enjoyed the thrill and the intensity of the games, also the excitement of the two lovers.

The Hunger Games is about a group of children, from the 12 districts, selected to kill each other in an arena and the last one alive wins. Everyone should read the Hunger Games because it is an action packed book and also has a good story line.

My Story: The Diary of Anne Frank

What is it about?
Anne Frank is about a girl in the Second World War who writes a diary. It explains what life was like being Jewish in the war. They are hiding out in an attic somewhere in Germany so they don’t get killed. The Jews were so badly treated back in the 1940’s as they were put in concentration camps and were forced to work. Hitler did this purely because he didn’t like the Jewish faith.

Why you should read this book?
Everyone should read it because it’s good if you want to learn about the war and conditions in the war. It also shows how brave people were and how they wouldn’t let Hitler kill them.

By Meerlin

A girl and her family hiding away from the Nazis in an attic. She keeps all her thoughts in her diary. She lives with several families. In the attic there are relationships formed. They get a lot of help from a girl called Miep Gies she brings them there food and she tells them about the news and what is happening in the real world. This book is set in World War 2.

The book is a copy of the real Anne Frank's diary. People should read it because its the truth and it reminds us of how bad Hitler treated the Jews and it reminds us of how we should treat people now!

Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging! by Louise Rennison

This book is about is about a girl named Georgia who thinks her life is boring and un-perfect. Then a fit boy comes to her school and falls in love with the popular girl called Lindsay and Georgia gets annoyed because Lindsay gets all the boys! The boy then realises that he likes Georgia, but he is older than her so will the age gap put him off? Why people should read this book: I think people should read this book because it tells you what a teenage girl goes through in the years of being a young adult! This book is generally for girls but some boys may like to read this so they get an idea of what a girl’s life is like. By: M&M’S
