This book was set in Nigeria during the Civil War in the 1960s and followed the creation and demise of the state of Biafra.The book tells the story of how the war affects the lives of 2 sisters: Olanna and Kainene , their partners and their houseboys. Life becomes difficult and they witness many atrocities as their country fights for independence. They start the story as estranged sisters and later become united in their grief.
The author leaves very little of their hardship to our imagination and makes us fully aware of the horrors of war. The reader becomes caught up with the characters and their fight to survive and we are left on tenderhooks right to the end of the book.
