Noughts and Crosses

Noughts and Crosses
Malorie Blackman

This book’s main focus is racism. It is set in a world where noughts are the inferior minority and crosses can do or say anything they like to them- a bit like America in the 50’s and 60’s. It is about two friends, Callum and Sephy, who had been friends since they were children. Sephy goes to an elite cross school that Callum is dying to get into. Callum eventually became one of the first noughts to go to a cross school! Sephy’s dad was a politician and was outraged that he go into the same school as his daughter even though he was smart enough to get in. Her dad was so bigoted and racist that he told Sephy that she couldn’t be friends with (or have a relationship) with Callum!  However, Sephy violated what her dad and society told her whole life - Crosses can’t love Noughts.

Everyone should read this book because it teaches the harsh lesson of racism but brings and up to date twist on an often repeated message. It is also very poignant and moving.

The Lucky One

The lucky one – Nicholas Sparks.

Is there really such thing as a lucky charm ? When U.S. Marine Logan picked up an old picture out of the dirt in Iraq, he didn’t think much of it. At first he decides to do the obvious right thing to do by asking around to see if the photo belongs to  anyone After a while, no one claimed it so he kept it .Logan ran into a lot of good luck since he found the photo, and his friend Victor believed that it was his good luck charm. Coincidence or not? Victor told him that he owed the girl in the picture for keeping him safe, and it was his destiny to find her. After Victor suddenly died, Logan and his dog, Zeus, started walking across the country in hopes of finding a girl he knew nothing about. Eventually Logan  found Elizabeth and her son, Ben. After getting a job working at Elizabeth’s grandmother’s kennel, he and Elizabeth grow a strong bond. Unsure of how she would react, he kept the photograph a secret from her. They quickly fell in love, but Beth’s ex-husband did all he could do to try to stop it. After word got out about his photograph, things started to fall apart. Not wanting to give up and turn back after how far he had come, he tries to put everything back together.

A heart warming novel was made into a brilliant movie. The book shows us not to take life for granted.

A kid nicknamed “Cecil”, from Bradley, England, gets his internet access cut off by the anti-piracy lobbyists, after he is accused of copyright infringement. His passion is remixing old clips of films and uploading them to the internet for all to see. His family begin to lose control of their lives when they can no longer access the internet to study and do their daily work, so under all this pressure, Cecil leaves and runs away to London, where he continues making his films on the run, showing them in sewers, and eventually on the walls of the Houses of Parliament. He and his friend ‘26’ attempt to get the corrupt entertainment industry to scrap bills on copyright laws, restricting them from creating and remixing the films they love.

It’s a great book, full of twists and is a very real life scenario, showing the corruption in the Government and Entertainment industry. Plus, it is licensed under the Creative Commons Share Alike Non-Derative license, and is available for a free download on Doctorow’s website, http://craphound.com -- LordPankake
