Happy Thinking Day!

The 22nd of February is celebrated as 'World Thinking Day' by Girl Guides and Scouts around the world.

So to mark it why not read 'How the Girl Guides Won the War' by Janie Hampton. Talking about the work of the Girl Guide Association during World War 2 it's an interesting look at what girls aged 7 up did to support the war effort - from collecting thread spools (to be used to hide maps for prisoners of war) to raising money to teaching evacuees.

The book also looks at what was happening to Guides outside the UK in occupied Europe. Plus what happened after the war when the Guide Association sent members 18years and older to help with those being released from concentration camps etc.

Well worth a read, it shows not only what a amazing movement the Guide Association is but also just how much children and teenagers can do when challenged.

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

Just won the Red House Children's Book Award!

Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris

This book is about a telepathic waitress who gets thrown into the dangerous and exhilarating world of the supernatural.
Sookie, the main character, meets Bill the vampire and saves his life from drainers, humans who want to sell vampire blood on the black market. Bill and Sookie become a couple. There are murders in the area and the police suspect Bill because of the fang marks on the bodies. However then Sookie’s brother is romantically linked the victims and Sookie will do whatever she can to help her brother, including hanging out with vampires and using her telepathic powers to help Bill’s boss out. Will it all work out or will the police jail her brother and it would all have been for nothing?

This is the first book in the Southern Vampire Mysteries and it is now a leading T.V. show True Blood. People should read this book because it is exciting, has good plot lines and, best of all, it is near enough jam-packed with all things supernatural. The vampires are out and the shape shifters are close behind. The fae, which includes the fairies, goblins and elves, could come out at any time then the humans really are in trouble.

The Notebook is a heart wrenching novel about a young summer love. It focuses on the romance of Noah and Allie. They fall in love at first sight however her rich parents fight to end their love as Noah is poor and not ‘worthy’ of Allie. So they are separated as Allie moves.
But as the story goes, ‘You never forget your first love’. Will Allie ever get her‘Happily Ever After’ with Noah?
I’d encourage any girl/woman who loves to sink into a romantic novel to read this. But make sure you have a box of tissues beside and maybe a slab of chocolate!

This book is part of a series. It’s about a girl who gets involved in magic. She fights different creatures with a skeleton detective. She goes through this whilst trying to keep Baron away so he can’t dominate the world. Stephanie, the girl, creates a ‘reflection’ so she can go off with skulduggery and save the world...
You should read this book if you like mystery books because it’s exciting. It also has lots of action and fights in it.

My Desperate Love Diary by Kelly Ann.

My Desperate Love Diary by Kelly Ann.

This book is romantic, girly book that will keep you turning the pages! This is the blurb:
‘Kelly Ann is fifteen and desperately in love with G - the biggest idiot in school. Her best friends Liz and Stephanie can see how awful G is - and also that Kelly Ann's quietly gorgeous friend Chris is madly in love with her. But Kelly Ann stumbles along blindly, unable to see what's right in front of her eyes. Navigating her way through teenage embarrassments, sick-filled parties, awful love poetry and green condoms, Kelly Ann is a hilariously endearing character and one every female reader, whatever age, will be able to relate to.’

There is a series of these books, including: My Rocky Romance Diary, My Now or Never Diary and My Disaster Dates Diary. I would recommend this book for 13-16 year olds. It is a fantastic read! It will make you laugh, smile and shout at the book with rage. Many teenage girls will be able to relate to this book and you are immediately drawn to the life of Kelly Ann. It’s all about the ‘difficulties’ of a normal girl teenage life. Relationships, boys, crushes and being in love! As soon as I had finished this book I went to get the next one!

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

"Mockingjay" is the third instalment of the popular kids franchise of books ‘The Hunger Games’. It was written by Suzanne Collins and it is pretty interesting.
It is about a girl called Katniss who just won ‘The Hunger Games’ but her winning started up a war. The Hunger Games is a competition where you have to fight for survival. If you don’t kill, you will be killed. It is a very cruel way to remember their history. She then has to go to war and fight ‘The Capitol’. The Capitol are the people who are in charge of all the districts and run the hunger games.
Mockingjay is a very good book and is good for teenagers to read. If you are to read anything this year, make sure it is Mockingjay.

Solace of the Road by Siobhan Dowd

Holly Hogan is a 14 year old girl living in foster care. After being adopted by a middle class family her favourite social worker leaves her for a better job. Although she is happy with her new family she still feels incomplete, so she sets out on a life changing trip to find her mother, whom she hasn’t seen since she was a child. On this trip she doesn’t travel as her boring old self she puts on her foster mothers blond wig and suddenly she is solace, her smart, brave and slightly terrifying alter ego.

I think people should read this book because it is filled with suspense, tragedy and humour. The characters are compelling and will have you both cheering them on and shedding a tear for them at the same time.

Going Solo - Roald Dahl

I have recently read the book Going Solo; it is a brilliant book about Roald Dahl's life when he was older. It talks about all of the challenging things he did for the RAF and includes what horrific injuries he gets whilst he is there. It is by far the best book I have ever read because it grips you on every page and once I had started reading it, I could not put it down!
